Bolsonaro in Miami: I am the ‘true president-elect’
Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has claimed to be the 'true president-elect' of Brazil. This statement was made shortly after his arrival in Miami, USA.
Flavio Bolsonaro claimed to be the ‘true president-elect’ of Brazil in his first statement since fleeing to the US.
Background
Jair Bolsonaro and his son Flavio traveled to the United States days before the end of his presidential term, following his defeat in the 2022 Brazilian general election. The election saw Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva win the presidency. There have been ongoing political tensions and protests in Brazil since the election results.
Why it matters
The claim by Flavio Bolsonaro suggests a continued rejection of the election results by his family and supporters. This could prolong political uncertainty and division within Brazil.
Possible impact
Such statements may further embolden Bolsonaro's supporters and could contribute to continued political instability in Brazil. International reactions to these claims remain to be seen.
